The exhilaration of Newcastle United claiming their first domestic trophy in 70 years, coupled with the sheer delight of an open-top bus parade through the city, could have diverted Eddie Howe’s side from their aim of securing Champions League qualification.
However, following their triumphant win at Wembley against Liverpool last month, Newcastle has made a strong statement with consecutive victories in the Premier League, the latest being a commanding 3-0 win over Leicester City on Monday. This keeps them firmly on track for a return to Europe’s elite competition.
Two early goals from Jacob Murphy and another from Harvey Barnes before the break ensured a relatively straightforward evening for Newcastle, allowing them to leapfrog Manchester City into fifth place.
They are now level on 53 points with Chelsea, who sit in fourth, but hold a game in hand over them.
“There was a concern that after winning the cup, we might drop our levels. It’s a natural reaction to achieving something significant and then experiencing a dip,” Howe remarked.
“The real test for the group was ‘Can we rise again?’ They’ve responded brilliantly. (Finishing in the top four) would mean a tremendous amount to us. It’s hard to look too far ahead and consider the potential ramifications.
“Our focus must be on our job, which is to secure wins.”
Newcastle will welcome Manchester United this weekend before they face Crystal Palace at home on Wednesday, followed by an away clash against top-four contenders Aston Villa.
“We’re playing with confidence, which will be essential as the next three matches will be challenging,” Howe commented.
“Things are heating up. The coming week is crucial for us, as those three demanding fixtures could greatly influence our standing by the end of the season.”
Murphy encapsulated the lively spirit within the club.
“It’s been incredible. The bus tour was something else, truly an unforgettable day. It’s clear why legends become addicted to winning trophies; the feeling is unmatched,” he said.
“Now that we’re back in training, we’re eager to replicate that success next season. We’re committed to pushing for more and experiencing that feeling again.”
