Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has been hospitalised after experiencing “unwellness for several days,” the club has confirmed.
The 47-year-old was admitted on Friday evening and will be unable to take charge for the Premier League encounter against Manchester United on Sunday.
“The head coach of the Magpies was taken into hospital on Friday night due to feeling unwell over the past few days,” read a statement from the club.
“Medical professionals have kept Eddie in hospital overnight for further examinations, which are still in progress.”
“He remains conscious and is in conversation with his family while receiving specialist medical attention.”
“Everyone at Newcastle United wishes Eddie a swift recovery, and we will provide further updates in due course.”
“Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones will oversee the team during Sunday’s match at St. James’ Park, supported by the club’s first-team staff.”
Assistant coach Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones will lead the squad against the Red Devils in a critical match for Newcastle’s aspirations of Champions League qualification next season.
Currently sitting in seventh place in the Premier League table, Newcastle could ascend to third should they win their two games in hand.
A top-five position is sufficient to secure a spot in the upcoming season’s Champions League, thanks to the strong performances of English clubs in European competitions, which has granted an additional spot.
