Everton maintained their recent unbeaten streak against Newcastle United with a narrow 1-0 victory. This result, however, did not prevent the Magpies from securing their spot in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) for the upcoming season, courtesy of Manchester United’s win over Aston Villa.
From the outset, Newcastle displayed a sense of urgency, generating an electrifying atmosphere within the St. James’ Park stands.
Everton quickly found their rhythm, with Iliman Ndiaye posing challenges down Newcastle’s right flank, while Anthony Gordon’s speculative shot was the only noteworthy attempt for the hosts in the opening 15 minutes.
Sandro Tonali exerted his influence in midfield, yet it was Everton who registered the first shot on target, courtesy of Carlos Alcaraz’s direct free-kick. Shortly thereafter, James Garner unleashed a powerful strike that forced an impressive save from Nick Pope.
On the half-hour mark, Jordan Pickford was called into action to deflect a long-range effort from Tonali, remaining alert to deny Alexander Isak’s follow-up attempt.

Pickford, England’s No.1, was again summoned to deny two attempts from Sven Botman, while Pope was called to tip over a powerful header from Alcaraz as both sides searched for a breakthrough that ultimately eluded them before the interval.
A brilliant run from Ndiaye sliced through the Newcastle midfield shortly after the break, and with Everton seizing control, the tension in the stadium was tangible.
As the game approached the hour mark, the volume levels increased. Although Newcastle had begun to seize the initiative, Everton’s defence stood strong.

In the 64th minute, a brilliant header from Alcaraz stunned the home fans, infusing David Moyes’ team with renewed energy as they withstood a relentless onslaught from Newcastle.
In the final 20 minutes, Everton’s penalty area was inundated with crosses from both flanks, a testament to the relentless attacking style that Eddie Howe instils in his teams.
Despite their best efforts, including a number of stellar saves from Pickford, Newcastle couldn’t find the back of the net. Nevertheless, they can celebrate their UCL qualification, thanks to Villa’s unsuccessful outing at Old Trafford.
On the other hand, Everton rounded off their 2024/25 season on a high with their 11th win.
