Newcastle United’s skipper, Bruno Guimaraes, proclaimed it to be the best day of his life after they secured a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the League Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, marking their first significant domestic trophy win in seven decades.
The last time Newcastle savoured domestic triumph was in 1955 when they lifted the FA Cup. They took the lead during the first half, with centre-back Dan Burn propelling a header into the net, before doubling their advantage with a goal from striker Alexander Isak in the second stanza.
“This victory is for our fans. They truly deserve everything. When I arrived here, I aimed to make my mark in the club’s history,” said Brazil international Guimaraes.
“We can now proudly call ourselves champions once more…
“I struggle to find words. Today is the best day of my life. For the fans, this is akin to a World Cup win.
“Many have grown up without witnessing us as champions. As my first year as captain, this is undoubtedly one of the best moments. It feels surreal.
“This club is my second home, and we are crafting our legacy.
“One day, when I eventually leave, I hope the fans will chant my name as they do for (former Newcastle captain Alan) Shearer. He sent me a text before the match, and I’m just so overwhelmed with emotion today.”
Burn gave Newcastle the lead in the 45th minute with a powerful header. He darted to the far post and executed a deft header that struck the ground before eluding the desperate dive of Liverpool’s goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher.
Although Newcastle had an initial effort from Isak chalked off by VAR for offside, the striker soon struck in the 52nd minute, capitalising on a knock-down from Jacob Murphy to find the back of the net.
Liverpool stirred into action towards the end of the match, with Federico Chiesa scoring to provide them with a glimmer of hope in stoppage time; however, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side managed to hold their ground.
