Bayern Munich will be without their injured goalkeeper Manuel Neuer for Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Inter Milan in Italy, as the club announced on Tuesday that he was unable to return to fitness in time for the match.
Neuer, who will join the team on the flight to Italy later today, is among a number of Bayern players currently sidelined, including attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala and defenders Alphonso Davies and Hiroki Ito, among others.
“Manuel Neuer will not participate due to injury but will travel to Milan with the squad to provide support,” Bayern stated in an announcement.
The 39-year-old goalkeeper has been nursing a calf muscle injury for over a month, though there had been optimism regarding his chance to play in the return leg after last week’s 2-1 defeat to Inter at home.
The victor of this tie will face either Barcelona or Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals.
Currently, Bayern holds the top position in the Bundesliga, enjoying a six-point advantage with only five matches remaining in the season.
