The Netherlands have unveiled their complete 23-player squad for the upcoming Women’s Euros this summer, set to take place in Switzerland.
Van de Sanden played a crucial role in the Netherlands’ victorious campaign at the European Championships in 2017. The 32-year-old Pachuca winger is making her return to the national team for the first time since February 2024, but she will miss the opportunity to achieve 100 caps for the Netherlands in Switzerland.
Meanwhile, 63-time international Merel van Dongen, who plays left-back for Mexican side Monterrey, was part of the Dutch squad that finished as runners-up at the 2019 World Cup. The seasoned defender has made way for Chelsea’s Veerle Buurman, who clinched the Women’s Eredivisie Talent of the Year award after her successful loan spell at PSV last season.
Beerensteyn
Lineth Beerensteyn, currently managing a persistent, undisclosed injury, has made the cut for the final squad. The leading scorer from last season’s Women’s Bundesliga reassured Dutch supporters, stating, “I am still working on my rehabilitation, and things are progressing positively,” in an interview with Algemeen Dagblad.
This edition of the Euros marks the Netherlands’ first major tournament since the 2009 European Championships without Lieke Martens in the squad. Martens hung up her boots for the national team in May 2024, concluding her illustrious career with 160 caps, inclusive of participation in three European Championships and three World Cups.
The Netherlands will compete in Group D alongside Wales, England, and France. The tournament is scheduled to be held from July 2 to July 27, 2025.
