Nathan Lyon has shed light on the feelings of Matt Kuhnemann following the report regarding his potentially suspicious bowling action.
After Australia’s recent tour of Sri Lanka, Kuhnemann underwent extensive testing but ultimately received clearance.
Talking to the media on Monday, Lyon noted that Kuhnemann was “devastated” when the report was issued. The experienced off-spinner expressed his belief that the entire process ought to have been handled “behind closed doors.”

“I don’t know what the exact process entailed for the match referees and officials. It would have been preferable if it had been kept private, allowing them to manage it away from the spotlight,” Lyon commented.
“I was quite heartbroken for him; in fact, I flew back home with him and he was very downcast while discussing what lay ahead. He was understandably anxious.
“I couldn’t be prouder of him for being cleared.”

Following Kuhnemann’s clearance, The Age reported that reforms might be on the table regarding how bowling action testing information is released.
The left-arm bowler faced public scrutiny after being named in the umpires’ report, prompting suggestions that a more confidential process would benefit players in the future.
In related news, Joel Wilson, the umpire who flagged Kuhnemann, has since been removed from the ICC’s elite panel.
