Nathan Cleary insists that the Panthers are not nearing “panic stations” just yet, although he acknowledges the “burden” of chasing a fifth consecutive premiership remains ever-present.
Penrith kicked off their latest title defence with a hard-fought victory over the Sharks in Las Vegas, but they have since encountered a losing streak against the Roosters, Storm, and Rabbitohs.
Last week, the club’s star halfback missed the disappointing defeat to South Sydney due to concussion. However, he is now fully fit and ready to make his return for round five.

“That’s probably the strange part of it,” Cleary commented on Wednesday.
“You really feel like you’re ready to play, but at the end of the day, it’s your brain, and you only get one of those. It’s no surprise that the NRL put these protocols in place.”
“Much smarter people than me devised these measures.”

Cleary’s return will provide a significant lift as the Panthers face the Cowboys on Friday night, but the two-time Clive Churchill Medal recipient knows he can’t carry the team alone.
While there’s still a long season ahead, the 27-year-old admitted that the mounting expectations on the team may have influenced their recent performances.
“Subconsciously, it might be affecting us,” Cleary remarked.
“Despite our focus on moving forward and improving, the past often lingers in your mind. Carrying that expectation can be quite a load, but I believe everyone’s mindset is in a good place.”
“It’s still early in the season, and we’re absolutely not at panic stations.”
“I’m keen to get to work and enhance our performances.”
This weekend will also mark the 250th first-grade appearance for Cleary’s long-time partner and co-captain, Isaah Yeo.

When asked about his thoughts on Isaah Yeo’s standing among the modern greats of the game, Cleary paid tribute to his long-time teammate.
“At the very pinnacle,” Cleary stated.
“He’s the anchor of our team; everyone looks up to him, including me. He’s like a father figure to all of us. An incredible individual and an excellent ambassador for everything we stand for—he’s truly the heart and soul of the team.
“Whenever adversity strikes, we look to him, and he’s always there for us.”
