Napoli defender Alessandro Buongiorno is likely to be sidelined for the remainder of the season due to an adductor injury in his right thigh, as confirmed by the Serie A leaders on Tuesday.
The team reclaimed sole ownership of the top spot in the Serie A standings with a 2-0 victory at home against Torino on Sunday. However, the champions of 2023 suffered a blow with Buongiorno and midfielder Frank Anguissa both sustaining injuries around the hour mark.
“Alessandro Buongiorno underwent diagnostic tests today at the Pineta Grande Hospital, which revealed a serious injury to the long adductor muscle in his right thigh,” stated Napoli in an announcement.
The club also noted that the 25-year-old has commenced his rehabilitation journey.
Reports from Italian media suggest that this injury will prematurely conclude Buongiorno’s season, leaving manager Antonio Conte without him for the crucial final four matches of their title pursuit.
Napoli is set to face relegation-battling Lecce on Saturday, followed by encounters with Genoa, Parma, and Cagliari in their concluding fixtures. Currently, Conte’s squad sits at the top of the league table with 74 points, three points clear of second-placed Inter Milan.
