Tyler Morton of Liverpool believes that England outperformed Spain in their impressive 3-1 win during the Under-21 European Championship quarter-finals. Following the match, his manager, Lee Carsley, likened him to a ‘Spanish-type’ midfielder.
Morton took on a crucial role at the base of the Young Lions’ midfield, successfully completing 87.9% of his 33 passes and registering 47 touches of the ball throughout the match.
This was notably his first start of the tournament, yet he faced disappointment after receiving a second yellow card, which will see him miss the semi-final against the Netherlands on Wednesday in Bratislava.
Carsley showered praise on the 23-year-old at the post-match press conference, acknowledging the difficulty in distinguishing between the typically Spanish players and the English ones.
In response to this, Morton commented: “I think it’s just my style of play.
“I feel very composed in possession, and that’s something I’ve always been encouraged to develop at Liverpool. I definitely feel at ease on the ball—that’s just my game.
“Whether that aligns more with a Spanish or English style of play, I believe that in today’s Premier League, it’s all about positioning, timing movements, and creating space to give yourself the necessary time on the ball.
“I consider my greatest strength to be finding those spots where I can get time on the ball and really demonstrate my comfort level. I feel I achieved that against Spain.”

Morton was among three changes to the starting line-up ahead of the clash against Spain. Despite the risk taken by Carsley in making alterations to his regulars, the midfielder feels his teammates effectively demonstrated their superiority.
“We showcased a genuine fight and an eagerness to play and move,” he noted.
“I believe we dominated a substantial portion of the game, and managing it was key. We handled it well and looked very composed off the ball.
“Kudos to all the lads—not just the centre-backs but also the forwards who pressed tirelessly; everyone deserves recognition.”
Addressing his suspension for the pivotal midweek encounter, he shared: “I was completely focused and unaware until after the game.
“In my opinion, it wasn’t a yellow card, but it’s in the past now.
“I just need to prepare for what lies ahead, but I will be supporting the boys throughout the game.”
