Monterrey’s head coach, Domenec Torrent, has highlighted the significant challenge that lies ahead for his players at the Club World Cup. They are set to face Borussia Dortmund in the Round of 16 in Atlanta on Monday.
The Mexican outfit progressed to the knockout stage following an impressive 4-0 victory over Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds last Wednesday, which ensured they finished second in Group E, just behind Inter Milan.
They clinched their spot in the knockout rounds after securing their first win of the tournament against Urawa, having previously drawn with both Inter Milan and Argentina’s River Plate.
“Our upcoming match is going to be extremely tough,” Torrent remarked. “Dortmund is another European side with a rich history of success, winning numerous trophies and championships both in Germany and across Europe.”
“We are familiar with what they bring to the table, and I have a clear understanding of the challenge ahead. They are a very robust team.”
“While they are not identical to Inter Milan, they are quite similar, so it will be interesting to see how our squad performs, especially since some players were on the bench – but we’ll be able to utilise them – and another player is recovering from a cold.”
“Each match, to me, resembles a game of chess; it’s all about analysing how the opponent manoeuvres their players and how we can adapt. It’s a process that unfolds step by step.”
“We will have three to four days to prepare for this new encounter, which presents a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase our football on a global stage, highlighting Mexican and Monterrey football.”
