Florian Neuhaus, the midfielder for Borussia Monchengladbach, has faced disciplinary action, receiving a hefty fine and being excluded from the first team after he was captured on video seemingly mocking the club’s sporting director.
The footage, which surfaced on social media, shows Neuhaus engaged in conversation with individuals dressed in Gladbach attire while discussing sporting director Roland Virkus.
The 28-year-old allegedly referred to Virkus as “the worst manager in the world” and mentioned the sporting director’s influence on his annual salary of four million euros (approximately $4.71 million).
In response, Gladbach announced that they have issued a “significant” fine to Neuhaus and have sidelined him from first-team training for a period of four weeks. Reports from the German daily Bild suggest that the fine could be around 100,000 euros.
“Florian Neuhaus’s behaviour and comments are detrimental to the club and simply unacceptable,” stated Gladbach’s CEO Stefan Stegemann in a press release on Thursday.
“He has caused reputational damage to the club and has profoundly disappointed everyone involved, which is not in line with our club’s values.”
Since joining Gladbach in 2017, Neuhaus has made more than 200 appearances in all competitions for the team, although he primarily played as a substitute last season, featuring just 17 times in the league as the club finished in 10th place.
