Mohamed Salah has expressed that he is “truly lost for words” following the heartbreaking news of Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota’s death.
Jota, aged 28, tragically lost his life in a car accident alongside his brother, Andre Silva, in Spain during the early hours of Thursday.
The duo was making their way back to England via ferry when their vehicle apparently suffered a tyre blowout while attempting to overtake another car, causing them to veer off the road.
This devastating incident occurred just days after the Portuguese international tied the knot with his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, who is the mother of his three children.
An outpouring of tributes has flooded in from the footballing world, with former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Portugal’s captain Cristiano Ronaldo among those leading the remembrances.
Salah, who has been teammates with Jota at Liverpool since 2020, took to social media to share an emotional tribute, revealing that the loss has made him apprehensive about returning to pre-season training.
“I am truly lost for words,” Salah shared on X, reflecting on the devastating loss.
“Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me about going back to Liverpool after the break.”
“Teammates come and go, but not like this. It’s going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won’t be there when we return.”
“My thoughts are with his wife, his children, and of course, his parents who suddenly lost their sons.”
“Those close to Diogo and his brother Andre need all the support they can get. They will never be forgotten.”
Salah and Jota played a total of 151 matches together for Liverpool, contributing to 19 goals. Jota made 182 appearances for the club, netting 65 goals, and was part of the squad that secured the Premier League title last season, as well as winning the FA Cup and two League Cups previously.
