Mohamed Salah expressed that he is “truly at a loss for words” following the heartbreaking death of his Liverpool teammate, Diogo Jota.
The 28-year-old Jota tragically lost his life in a car accident in Spain, alongside his brother Andre Silva, during the early hours of Thursday morning.
They were making their way back to England by ferry when their vehicle is believed to have suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking another car, leading them to veer off the road.
This devastating event occurred just days after the Portugal international tied the knot with his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, who is the mother to their three children.
Tributes have flooded in from across the football world, with prominent figures such as former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo leading the way.
Now, Salah, who has been Jota’s teammate at Liverpool since 2020, has shared his own heartfelt message, admitting that the tragedy has left him feeling anxious about returning to pre-season training.
“I am truly at a loss for words,” Salah wrote on X, reflecting on the profound impact of Jota’s passing.
“Until yesterday, I never imagined there could be anything that would make me dread going back to Liverpool after the break.
“Teammates come and go, but not like this. Accepting that Diogo won’t be there when we return will be incredibly difficult.
“My thoughts are with his wife, his children, and of course his parents, who have suddenly lost their sons.
“Those who were close to Diogo and his brother Andre need all the support they can get. They will never be forgotten.”
Salah and Jota featured together in 151 matches for Liverpool, contributing to a combined total of 19 goals.
Jota made 182 appearances for the club, netting 65 goals, and was an integral part of the squad that clinched last season’s Premier League title, in addition to winning the FA Cup and two League Cups.
