A resolute Mikel Merino has stated that Arsenal have “demonstrated we can triumph anywhere” and remains confident that they can still secure a spot in the Champions League final, despite suffering a defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their semi-final clash.
The Gunners now face a challenging task following Ousmane Dembele’s solitary goal, which sealed the win for PSG at the Emirates on Tuesday night.
Merino had a goal disallowed for offside just after the start of the second half. Meanwhile, PSG narrowly missed extending their lead when they hit the crossbar late in the match.
“Paris is a difficult venue, but we have consistently shown that we can compete with anyone, and with all due respect, I believe we will win the second leg,” Merino expressed.
“We’ve proven we can secure victories anywhere, including at the Bernabeu (by defeating Real Madrid 2-1) and against top teams in the Premier League, which boosts our confidence significantly.
“The outcome at the Emirates doesn’t alter our approach, as this team’s mentality is always geared towards winning – even if we were three goals up heading to Paris.”
For the first leg, Merino was shifted back to midfield due to Thomas Partey’s suspension. However, with Partey set to return for the upcoming match in Paris next Wednesday, Merino may revert to a forward position.
Both Arsenal and PSG are aiming to clinch the Champions League title for the first time in their histories.
