Dario Melo remains optimistic about Mozambique’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite Algeria currently at the top of Group G.
Following four matches, the Mambas are tied with the 2019 African champions on nine points, but sit in second place due to a less favourable goal difference.
Chiquinho Conde’s squad is set to continue their qualification journey with a home game against Uganda on March 20, before heading to Tizi Ouzou five days later for a crucial clash with the Desert Foxes.
With only days to go until their match against the Cranes in Cairo, the striker acknowledges that earning a World Cup spot won’t be straightforward but insists that the team is keeping a positive outlook.
“The group is still very much open, and despite our current standing, we believe we have a real shot at making it to the 2026 World Cup.”
“Our only loss has been to Algeria, but I’m pleased with how we bounced back, particularly with our victory over Guinea.”
“We know the significance of qualifying for the World Cup – it could change our lives forever.”
“Going forward, we will approach our remaining matches with the utmost seriousness and not allow ourselves to become complacent.”

Melo also noted that the team is drawing motivation from the likes of Angola and Togo, who have made World Cup appearances against the odds.
The Palancas Negras achieved a stunning upset by knocking out Nigeria in a challenging qualifying group, leading to their first World Cup appearance in 2006 in Germany.
Simultaneously, Stephen Keshi’s Hawks clinched their spot by overcoming Senegal, Zambia, and Mali during the same tournament.
He added, “Like the other teams in our group, we firmly believe we have a shot, and we’re eager to follow in the footsteps of Angola and Togo, who qualified as underdogs.”
“Despite being tagged as outsiders, we’re focused on our performance and letting our results speak for themselves.”
“Our squad is a blend of young talent and experienced players, with a coach who inspires us all. We’re committed to proving ourselves, and we hope the odds will be in our favour.”
“Our primary wish is to keep our team injury-free as we advance in the qualifiers.”
“The road ahead is long, but we’re determined to give our all and seize every opportunity that arises.”
In related news, coach Conde announced a 25-member squad on Tuesday, featuring 20-year-old Maritimo goalkeeper Kimiss Zavala and Black Bulls striker Kelvio Neves.
Edmilson makes a comeback after an extended injury absence, recently returning to action with South African heavyweights Kaizer Chiefs. Additionally, 33-year-old Chico is also returning for the first time in nearly two years.
