The Canberra Raiders pulled off a remarkable golden-point comeback in a match marred by contentious officiating that heavily impacted the Melbourne Storm.
With just five minutes remaining in normal time, the Storm held an 18-12 lead, and it seemed Ryan Papenhuyzen had sealed the win with a field goal.
However, referee Gerard Sutton consulted with the Bunker regarding possible contact by Trent Loiero on Raiders prop Joseph Tapine during the preceding play.
Loiero was penalised and placed on report for an elbow to Tapine’s head, which resulted in the disallowance of the field goal.

“That’s a huge call,” Kevin Walters remarked on Fox League.
Shortly after, Raiders fullback Kaeo Weekes pulled off a brilliant chip and chase, levelling the score and sending the match into golden point.
Yet, more drama was to unfold.
Late in the Storm’s tackle count, Hudson Young found himself penalised for a supposed second effort on Sua Fa’alago, who hadn’t been fully tackled.
“I’m uncertain about that decision,” Walters commented.

However, the Bunker intervened again, this time changing the call to a penalty for late contact.
Melbourne found themselves in an excellent attacking position as Stefano Utoikamanu charged towards the posts.
During the play-the-ball, he collided with Tom Starling, leading to further penalties.

Utoikamanu was sent to the sin bin, alongside Josh Papalii for intervening.
Just before the golden point’s halftime, Loiero faced yet another penalty for a high shot on Hudson Young.
“A night to forget for the Melbourne forward,” remarked Warren Smith on Fox.

Jamal Fogarty then stepped up to convert the penalty goal, securing a victory for the Raiders and sending their supporters into a frenzy.
“What an incredible sight,” Walters exclaimed.
