Matthew Lloyd has voiced his concerns regarding Melbourne, suggesting that the reigning premiers find themselves in a precarious position, described as “no man’s land”.
The Demons, renowned for their powerful stoppage play led by Max Gawn, Christian Petracca, Jack Viney, and Clayton Oliver, faced a harsh reality in their recent match, suffering a 58-point defeat to Gold Coast, where they were heavily outplayed at the contest.

In the match, Melbourne recorded -16 in clearances, -18 in contested possessions, and -25 in inside 50s, illustrating their struggles in territory control.
Lloyd believes the Demons seem to have lost their foundational identity.
“What I previously admired about them was their toughness. They were relentless. Sure, their entries might not have been exceptional, but yesterday they were outplayed in areas where they were usually dominant,” Lloyd remarked on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.
“They were outmuscled in clearances, centre clearances, and contested possessions, taken to task by the Suns, and after that, they seemed unwilling to put in the effort.”

“Melbourne has now dropped two consecutive matches by 10 goals. While we discussed the Bombers last week, this performance matched that intensity. The Gold Coast players were charging forward with ease.
“If Melbourne isn’t competitive at the contest, what can they rely on? They are truly in a difficult situation regarding their position as a team.
“While they’ve brought in new players, if they intend to tackle a game against the Suns, given their current form, they will face significant challenges.”
Melbourne head coach Simon Goodwin concurs that improving their contest game is essential.

“There were certainly several issues during the match, particularly concerning contesting the ball. Our approach to contests, both at grounds and stoppages, currently falls short of expectations. It’s vital we rectify this swiftly; it’s the foundation of the game,” Goodwin informed the press.
“They often escaped from those situations far too easily… we need to address that. Additionally, our ball handling and fundamental skills were not up to par.”
The challenges continue for the Demons as they prepare to play Geelong at GMHBA Stadium in round four.
