Scott McTominay’s double secured SSC Napoli a 2-0 victory over Torino, marking a remarkable 13th consecutive home match without defeat against Il Toro and placing them in a potentially pivotal position at the summit of the Serie A standings.
Excitement filled the air at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona following Inter Milan’s earlier loss to Roma, and it took only seven minutes for Gli Azzurri to ignite jubilant celebrations.
Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa made a driving run into the box, connecting with Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s pass before delivering a first-time assist to McTominay, who made no errors in front of goal.
Shortly after, McTominay’s fellow countryman Che Adams squandered a significant chance for Torino, and Eljif Elmas saw his shot thwarted.
Despite the final scoreline, both teams had moments of possession control. Romelu Lukaku nearly capitalised on an error from Guillermo Maripan, intercepting a pass in the box, but frustration followed as the ball rolled out of play.
Napoli maintained their composure and were duly rewarded in the 42nd minute when McTominay struck again, meeting Matteo Politano’s floated cross ahead of Cesare Casadei to convert with another precise first-time finish.
After the break, Torino dominated possession yet struggled to challenge Alex Meret, with Alessandro Buongiorno firmly denying Karol Linetty’s powerful attempt.
However, the hosts faced a setback as both Anguissa and Buongiorno were forced off due to injury within a span of six minutes.
Nonetheless, Napoli’s defence remained strong, as exemplified by Torino’s inability to register any shots on target throughout the encounter, with the visitors sometimes appearing completely out of sorts.
The injury woes continued for Antonio Conte, with Stanislav Lobotka limping off in the dying minutes, yet Napoli looked untroubled as they celebrated their third consecutive win, moving three points clear of Inter at the top of the table with just four Serie A matches remaining.
In contrast, Torino have faced defeat in two of their last three fixtures, having lost just once in their preceding 14 matches, although they still hold 10th place.
