Matthew Lloyd has expressed surprise at the prospect of Simon Goodwin continuing as Melbourne’s coach by 2026, following the club’s dismal 0-5 start to the season.
After a narrow defeat to GWS in the opening round, the Demons have struggled to find form, suffering lacklustre losses against North Melbourne, Gold Coast, Geelong, and most recently, Essendon.
In their match against the Bombers on Saturday night, the Dees could only muster 57 points, leading Lloyd to conclude that their ongoing struggle to generate offensive cohesion has been a long-standing issue.

“This issue isn’t just a recent development; it’s been ongoing for 27 to 28 games,” Lloyd remarked during an appearance on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.
“They finished 14th last season, which raises serious concerns for them.
“If you examine their entries inside 50—which has been discussed extensively—they’re simply unable to score. In the current season, they’ve managed to score 74, 66, 62, 46, and 57 points.”
“You can scrutinise the personnel all you like, but I believe it’s fundamentally a system problem. Take a look at Hawthorn; they have Mabior Chol and some solid small forwards surrounding him—it’s more than just player selection.”

“This is where Simon Goodwin finds himself under immense pressure.
“I would be astonished if he is still coaching next year, considering it has been far too long without any effective solutions.”
Western Bulldogs legend Nathan Brown echoed this sentiment, stating that Melbourne’s predicament primarily revolves around “game plan and system”.
Following their 2021 premiership and an impressive start to the subsequent season with 10 consecutive wins, the Demons have only secured 33 victories out of their last 67 matches, which includes four final losses.
The winless Demons will take on the Fremantle Dockers next weekend.
