Matthew Lloyd has issued a stern warning to Carlton, urging them to make a significant effort to retain star ruckman Tom De Koning, even suggesting that he would consider offloading other players to ensure the 25-year-old remains at the club.
Speaking on Nine’s Footy Classified, Lloyd argued that financial decisions regarding the salary cap should not result in Carlton losing a player who is rapidly establishing himself as one of the top ruckmen in the competition.
Presently, the salary cap situation at Carlton is skewed, with six key players consuming about 34 per cent of the total cap, including Brownlow Medallist Patrick Cripps, Sam Walsh, Jacob Weitering, Charlie Curnow, and Harry McKay among the highest earners.
De Koning is expected to join this elite group with a salary approaching the seven-figure mark, and Lloyd expressed his belief that allowing De Koning to slip away due to salary cap constraints would be a grave mistake.
“If it comes down to a financial issue… if it’s purely about money, then you simply cannot afford to lose him,” remarked the Essendon legend.
“I’d be willing to part ways with Harry McKay any time, and I realise that’s a sensitive topic given what Harry is experiencing. However, speaking generally, I would almost consider letting Sam Walsh go before De Koning.’
Afl.com.au has reported that Carlton has put forth a seven-year deal worth approximately $7.5 million for De Koning. However, St Kilda is allegedly offering ‘millions more’ in their attempt to entice him away from the Blues.

“You simply cannot replace De Koning; you can find replacements for other players,” Lloyd stated.
“While it’s important not to exhaust all your resources on any single player, the stakes are really high here.
“If ensuring we keep Tom means losing another player, then that’s a sacrifice I would consider.”
“I’d be astonished if, in the coming month, they told him they couldn’t meet his financial expectations.”

Carlton is currently searching for their first win of the 2025 season, sitting at 0-4 and positioned 16th on the ladder, although De Koning has begun the season impressively.
“It’s a bizarre situation where Carlton might be considered the worst team in the league, yet Tom De Koning could be the standout player after just three weeks,” noted host Sam McLure, highlighting the contrast.
De Koning spoke exclusively with Nine prior to Round 1 regarding his future and contract discussions, emphasising the importance of concentrating on aspects within his control.
“I focus on the elements I can manage, such as my performance on the field and daily routines. I’ve learned that getting swept up in external factors, whether it’s about large offers or high expectations, isn’t beneficial,” De Koning remarked.
“Ultimately, I have faith that my efforts will reflect positively, both on and off the field.”
De Koning is anticipated to make a decision in the coming month regarding whether he will remain with Carlton or pursue opportunities elsewhere.
