Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd has expressed concern that Harley Reid’s current predicament may be echoing the tumultuous departure of Jason Horne-Francis from North Melbourne as Reid finds himself embroiled in controversy once again.
During the weekend’s match, Reid was seen gesturing obscenely towards Lions fans and engaged in a physical dispute with Oscar McInerney. He also had altercations with players from the Gold Coast Suns in the opening round.
Although Lloyd initially came to Reid’s defence after round one, he was ultimately let down by his behaviour demonstrated over the weekend.
“After viewing his performance for a second week, it appears his behaviour hasn’t improved, which is negatively impacting his on-field performance. He seems to be expending too much energy in conflicts with others, wrestling opponents, and adopting an overly confrontational attitude, which is detrimental to his game,” Lloyd commented on Nine’s Footy Classified.

“If I were in coach Andrew McQualter’s position, I would bring him in and explain that his football isn’t up to scratch and that his off-field activities are having a negative impact. He needs a firm warning.”
“… I worry that if he persists in this manner and disregards McQualter or his senior teammates, is he engaging in self-sabotage regarding his future with West Coast, or is it simply immaturity?”
Lloyd further noted the similarities with Horne-Francis, who opted for a move to Port Adelaide in 2022 after being selected as the No.1 pick the previous year.

“It reminds me of Jason Horne-Francis at North Melbourne, where he lacked respect for his teammates… He refused to take advice from anyone while there, so this season will be a crucial test for the West Coast Eagles and Reid in terms of their dynamic moving forward,” he stated.
“I’ll be keeping a close eye on how committed he is going to be.”
“There have been reports suggesting that he appears disengaged during huddles and breaks. I would be surprised if he isn’t addressed by his senior leaders and the coaching staff if this behaviour continues, as it is not beneficial for his development.”
Despite the scrutiny surrounding Reid’s performance against the reigning premiers, he managed to record 15 disposals, six clearances, and seven tackles.
