Australian winger Mary Fowler has revealed she faces an extended period on the sidelines following an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained last weekend.
The 22-year-old was forced to leave the pitch during Manchester City’s FA Cup semi-final loss to Manchester United, with scans confirming the severity of the injury to her right knee, according to a statement from Football Australia released late on Wednesday.
“I’m very disappointed to have to step away from the game for a while,” Fowler expressed in the statement.
“It’s never easy dealing with something like this, particularly after putting in so much effort and feeling good about my form. The journey ahead will be tough, but I’m determined to tackle it head-on.“
This injury mirrors the one that has sidelined Fowler’s teammate, Chelsea striker Sam Kerr, since January last year.
“This is unfortunate news for Mary and for all of us who recognise the dedication and passion she brings to her sport,” commented Tom Sermanni, Australia’s interim coach.
“She’s an outstanding talent and a cherished member of our squad, and we’re confident she will face this challenge with the same bravery she shows on the field.“
Fowler, who has earned 64 caps for Australia, will commence a rehabilitation programme under the supervision of Manchester City’s medical staff, with additional support from Football Australia.
