Following a whirlwind of speculation regarding his future as his contract neared its end, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has opted to remain with the club, reports indicate.
It was announced yesterday that both Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are primed to sign fresh deals with Liverpool, which will secure their positions at the club until 2027.
This comes amidst news that defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is likely to depart for LaLiga giants Real Madrid, bringing to a close his 21-year relationship with the club he joined as a youth.
As per Sky reporter Florian Plettenberg on X, it seems Van Dijk’s stay has been confirmed, a piece of news that should ease the minds of many supporters.
“Virgil van Dijk will extend his contract with Liverpool!” Plettenberg tweeted.
“The 33-year-old world-class centre-back has chosen to stay at #LFC, despite receiving several offers from other clubs, all of which he has declined.
“Final details are currently being finalised. The intention is for Van Dijk to sign a new two-year agreement, ensuring his presence at the club until 2027, as also noted by The Athletic.
“The captain and legend will remain!”
At 33 years old, Van Dijk will be celebrating his 34th birthday this year. By the time his new contract concludes, he will be just days away from turning 36.
The Dutch international, who has featured in every Premier League match for Liverpool this season, spoke to journalists in the mixed zone at Craven Cottage following last weekend’s 3-2 defeat as discussions around his contract intensified.
“There is progress, yes.” When pressed on whether this meant he would sign an extension, Van Dijk responded: “I don’t know, we’ll see.”
He further added, “Listen, these are internal discussions, and we’ll see. I love the club, I love the fans, and they were there for us again (at Craven Cottage).
“We aimed to reward them with our performance, but I ask them to be present again on Sunday (against West Ham) and make the stadium an incredible atmosphere as they always do for us.”
