Luka Modric, the Croatian captain of Real Madrid, is set to make a move to AC Milan following the Club World Cup, as confirmed on Monday by the Serie A club’s newly appointed manager, Massimiliano Allegri.
This transfer signifies the end of the 39-year-old midfielder’s illustrious 13-year tenure with the Spanish giants, having declared his intention to depart Madrid after the Club World Cup back in May.
“Modric will be joining us in August. He is an exceptional talent,” Allegri remarked to journalists during his inaugural press conference as Milan’s manager.
Real Madrid is scheduled to face Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals of the Club World Cup on Wednesday, with the final match set for Sunday.
The 2018 Ballon d’Or recipient, Modric, will be welcomed into a Milan side eager to rebound after a lacklustre season that saw them finish in eighth place and miss out on European competition.
“To the supporters, I emphasise that the most crucial aspect is to put in the hard work every day,” Allegri stated. “The path to restoring our reputation lies in accountability and achieving results. We will undoubtedly need their backing.”
Allegri, who is returning to Milan for a second stint following the dismissal of Sergio Conceicao at the end of May, also highlighted significant changes planned for the squad ahead of the upcoming season.
Midfielder Tijjani Reijnders has already been sold to Manchester City in June, while French left-back Theo Hernandez could potentially join Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal.
“Although Reijnders and Hernandez will not be part of next season’s squad, (goalkeeper) Mike Maignan and (forward) Rafael Leao appear keen to remain,” Allegri added.
Milan will begin their Serie A campaign on August 23 with a home match against Cremonese.
Allegri, who led Milan to a Serie A title in the 2010-11 season, previously managed Juventus before returning to the Rossoneri.
