As Inter Miami gears up for their much-anticipated opener against Egypt’s Al Ahly this Saturday, head coach Javier Mascherano and defender Jordi Alba are thrilled at the chance to represent the USA as hosts in this expanded tournament.
Mascherano, a former Barcelona and Liverpool star who has led Inter Miami since November 2024, sees this competition as a chance to represent not only America but also the Latin American community.
“We’re in a unique situation because, even though we’re based in the United States, we’re surrounded by a vibrant Latino community that brings a distinct Latin American vibe,” he shared.
“In Miami, we have the opportunity to draw in numerous tourists who want to watch us play.
“We also have a large base of passionate fans, evident in our home games, and we hope they come out to support us for all three matches, including our away game in Atlanta.”

With the legendary Lionel Messi leading the side, Inter Miami is eager to showcase their skills against some of the globe’s top club teams, starting with Al Ahly this Saturday.
Mascherano expressed excitement at the prospect of experiencing the fervour of US fans, likening the tournament “to the atmosphere of a FIFA World Cup”.
He added: “Our goal is to compete to the best of our abilities, just as we strive to do in every tournament. We understand the level of competition is extremely high, and we’ll be facing elite teams.
“It’s all about taking it one match at a time, giving ourselves a chance to advance from the group stage and into the Round of 16.”
Speaking highly of his superstar teammate Messi, Mascherano praised the forward’s influence on both Inter Miami and the broader football community.
“He’s the best, and he transcends the sport. He changes the game everywhere he goes.
“The way he’s made such a significant impact in this country is remarkable, and we must leverage the momentum he brings.”
Jordi Alba, who spent nine years alongside Messi at Barcelona from 2012 to 2021, echoed Mascherano’s sentiments.
“Coming to share the dressing room (with Messi) again at Inter Miami has been wonderful; it felt like we clicked instantly,” the Spaniard remarked.
“We’ve teamed up for countless goals, and it’s naturally easy to collaborate with the greatest player in history.
“For me, it’s a privilege, and I’ve always maintained that having Leo makes any team stronger; personally, it has also helped me become a better player.”
While Alba acknowledged the fierce competition they will face, he remains optimistic about their ability to capitalise on the home advantage as they aim to progress through the tournament.
“Each group match will be special. The opponents will be challenging, but we enjoy the support of our home crowd, and we hope they will join us to enjoy the matches,” he said.
“We know it’s a difficult group against formidable teams, but we are aiming high and have aspirations to compete well and make a mark in this challenging tournament.”
