Queensland triumphed in a thrilling showdown, sealing a 26-24 win which sets the stage for a decisive finale, despite a contentious late call from the Bunker. NSW came close to achieving a remarkable comeback in State of Origin history.
In heavy rain in Perth, the Maroons secured victory even after suffering a second-half shutout, conceding 18 points without reply. Tensions rose in the dying moments when Kalyn Ponga was penalised for a knock-on, despite what appeared to be a backwards drop of a towering bomb.
Even NSW legend Andrew Johns weighed in, suggesting that the referee and Bunker officials had erred in their judgement.
As the Blues mounted one last attacking drive, Dylan Edwards returned the ball with just over 20 seconds left, but unfortunately, the dynamic fullback lost possession, snuffing out any hopes of a miraculous comeback for NSW.
Nine commentator Mat Thompson had earlier remarked: “If NSW pull this off, it’ll be the greatest comeback in Origin history.”
NSW not only lamented their inability to break through the Queensland defence one more time due to that controversial Bunker decision but also the struggle of Zac Lomax with his goal-kicking. Stepping in for Nathan Cleary, who was sidelined due to an upper-leg injury and had converted none of his four attempts in game one, Lomax only managed to convert two out of five opportunities.
In contrast, Valentine Holmes was flawless, converting all five of his shots, including one penalty goal.
