Bruno Fernandes, the captain of Manchester United, expressed his admiration for former club skipper Roy Keane. However, he emphasized his desire to forge his own path following Keane’s remarks regarding his work ethic.
After earning the man of the match accolade in United’s convincing 3-0 triumph against relegation-threatened Leicester City in the Premier League on Sunday, Fernandes found himself at the centre of criticism from Keane during an appearance on the Stick to Football podcast.
The 30-year-old midfielder from Portugal has faced scrutiny for his on-field attitude, and he has acknowledged that his gesturing and complaints can be frustrating for both teammates and opponents alike.
“I have my own way of doing things,” Fernandes told Sky Sports. “While it’s not pleasant to hear negative feedback, it does inspire you, and clearly, people believe there are areas for improvement.”
“You need to interpret it positively, understanding whether there’s room for growth based on what people are saying. I hold Roy Keane in high regard.”
“It’s evident that not everyone will appreciate my approach, and I respect all opinions. I deeply admire Roy Keane and recognize that there’s always scope for me to enhance my game, my leadership skills, and everything I undertake in life.”

This season, Fernandes has made 44 appearances for United, scoring 16 goals and contributing 15 assists. He played a key role in the win over Leicester, scoring once and assisting twice.
At present, United sit 13th in the Premier League, having amassed 37 points from 29 matches.
“He’s exceptional in that regard, always ready to perform and adept at recovery,” reflected United manager Ruben Amorim regarding his captain. “I can’t predict the future, but I rely on performance data and what I observe during matches.”
“Every match, I witness a Bruno who poses a threat and who can recover from any situation. He’s a consistent performer. What has genuinely astounded me is his work ethic each day.”
