On Sunday, the Mac Allister brothers from Argentina, Alexis and Kevin, achieved a remarkable family milestone by lifting championship trophies on the same day, albeit in different countries and without actively participating in their teams’ final games of the season.
Alexis celebrated Liverpool’s Premier League triumph at Anfield, following the club’s title win last month. Meanwhile, his elder brother Kevin experienced a tense afternoon in Belgium as his team, Union Saint-Gilloise, marked a historic championship victory after a 90-year wait.
While Kevin watched from the sidelines due to a suspension for their home match against Gent, which they won 3-1 to secure their first title since 1935, Alexis opted to skip Liverpool’s final match against Crystal Palace to avoid potential injury.
“I believe he played the latter part of the season embodying the Argentine mentality,” remarked Liverpool manager Arne Slot. “He never gives up, no matter how he feels, but it wouldn’t be wise to risk a player with a slight injury.”
The 26-year-old midfielder, who was part of Argentina’s World Cup-winning squad in Qatar, joined Liverpool from Brighton & Hove Albion two seasons ago and made 30 starts during their title-winning campaign.
Kevin, who is a year older and plays as a forward, shares the same unyielding spirit as his younger brother.
The Belgian publication Het Nieuwsblad referred to him as “a soldier who never backs down”.
“He has recently played with a protective mask, a bandaged shoulder, and a strapped knee, yet he refused to be sidelined by injury,” they noted.
Kevin expressed his frustration about missing the action while his teammates fought for the title.
“It was tough to watch from the bench. I was composed, even though the first half wasn’t our best performance,” he remarked to reporters.
Their older brother, Francis, aged 29, currently competes in Argentina’s top division. All three brothers began their football journey at Argentinos Juniors, sharing the pitch together for the first time in 2017.
Their father, Carlos, earned three caps for Argentina and played for Boca Juniors, where he clinched a league championship title in 1992.
