Lyon, under the management of Paulo Fonseca, has faced administrative relegation to Ligue 2 following serious financial difficulties. The ruling can still be contested.
The National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG) announced on Tuesday that the French side would be demoted to the second division.
Club president John Textor and director of football Mickael Gerlinger were interviewed by the DNCG on Tuesday in an attempt to avert this outcome, following an initial warning issued on November 15.
During that winter period, the DNCG had already indicated that relegation would be inevitable if the club failed to meet financial guarantees due to a substantial debt of €175 million (£149 million).
Textor expressed confidence “in the numbers” at that time, assuring that the club would “generate several hundred million euros in the upcoming months.”
Despite these assurances, the penalties have remained, leaving Fonseca’s team in a precarious position.
