Lyon clinched their fourth successive title in the women’s French league on Friday, comfortably defeating Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the playoff final.
Goals from Melchie Dumornay, Kadidiatou Diani, and Wendie Renard secured the club’s 18th title in the history of their women’s team.
Exhibiting dominance throughout the season, Lyon finished the regular campaign unbeaten, with an impressive record of 20 wins and just two draws.
Despite their stellar performance, the players voiced their frustration over the title being decided by a playoff system, but they made a swift statement against PSG.
Under the guidance of coach Joe Montemurro, who is set to become the head coach of the Australian national women’s team, Lyon took the lead in first-half stoppage time when Haiti international Dumornay netted the opener.
Her low effort past PSG’s England goalkeeper Mary Earps came after a well-placed assist from American Lindsay Heaps.
Diani extended the lead to 2-0 in the 80th minute, while veteran defender Renard sealed the win with a penalty in injury time, awarded following a VAR review for a handball by Oceane Hurtre.
This triumph in the domestic league provides a much-needed lift for Lyon after their semi-final exit from the Champions League at the hands of Arsenal.
As the club looks ahead, a rebuilding phase is on the horizon, with several seasoned players, including 35-year-old Eugénie Le Sommer, set to depart in the summer.
