While Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham basks in Hollywood fame, their Welsh rivals Swansea City are quietly making their mark with a splash of stardom of their own. Real Madrid’s renowned midfielder Luka Modric is set to step into club ownership for the first time, acquiring a minority stake.
The 39-year-old Croatian, whose contract with the Spanish giants extends until mid-2025, will join American investors Andy Coleman, Brett Cravatt, Nigel Morris, and Jason Cohen in this new ownership arrangement, as reported by local Welsh media.
Modric’s entry into the Swansea ownership comes at a time when the Championship club is grappling with financial hurdles.
They disclosed a pre-tax loss of £15.2 million for the latest financial year, which is a slight improvement from the £17.9 million loss recorded the previous year.
The club’s turnover for the year ending June 30, 2024, was reported to be £21.5 million, according to the BBC.
In their financial report, Swansea addressed the harsh economic conditions of England’s second tier.
“The board recognises that while the extent of the operational loss stems from the fiercely competitive nature of the EFL Championship, where the club currently competes, efforts will remain focused on achieving operational efficiencies,” the statement noted.
With substantial costs tied to the upkeep of their stadium and two training complexes, and in the absence of “any imminent prospect of a redistribution agreement between the EFL and the Premier League,” Swansea indicated a continued reliance on support from their ownership group as a primary source of funding.
Modric’s involvement is expected to infuse excitement into a Swansea team that harbours aspirations of returning to the Premier League and the financial rewards that accompany it – though that vision may take some time to materialise.
Currently, the Swans find themselves entrenched in mid-table, sitting 12th in the 24-team Championship with 54 points, a substantial 34 points adrift of leaders Leeds United and Burnley, who are both vying for top honours with 88 points and just four matches remaining.
