Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique is determined for his team to maintain their focus on both domestic and European competitions, despite nearly clinching a fourth consecutive Ligue 1 title.
PSG overwhelming defeated relegation-threatened Saint-Etienne 6-1 on Saturday, meaning they only required a draw between AS Monaco and Nice later in the day to claim their 14th league title, and a second consecutive under Luis Enrique. However, Les Monegasques triumphed 2-1, putting their 13th title aspirations on hold.
“We are already champions; we’ve been the best team in the league from the very start until now, and the actual moment we secure the title is just a detail,” Luis Enrique told the media.
“I’d prefer Nice to avoid drawing with Monaco so that we can celebrate the title with our fans at the Parc des Princes in Paris; that would be wonderful,” he added.
Unbeaten in their last 27 matches, PSG currently boasts a 21-point lead over second-placed Monaco with seven fixtures remaining.
The former Barcelona manager, who guided the Spanish side to a treble in 2015, emphasised the need for PSG to uphold their intensity and avoid any sense of complacency to replicate that success.
“We have two months of competition left where we’re all battling for titles again, and we need to maintain our competitiveness across all tournaments. That’s the challenging part. The simple thing is to relax; it’s easy to lower our intensity. We cannot allow that to happen,” he stated.
PSG will square off against second-tier Dunkerque in the French Cup semi-finals on Tuesday, followed by a two-legged quarter-final tie in the Champions League against Aston Villa next month.
“We aim to win everything; that’s our ambition—to compete, to win, and to secure each and every trophy,” the coach concluded.
