Premier League title holders Liverpool have unveiled significant changes to Arne Slot’s coaching team, notably naming Giovanni van Bronckhorst as the new assistant to Slot.
The 50-year-old Van Bronckhorst recently held the position of head coach at Turkish Super Lig club Besiktas before being let go in November 2024. Prior to his stint in Turkey, the former left-back for Arsenal, Barcelona, and Rangers managed teams including Feyenoord, Rangers, and the Chinese side Guangzhou R&F.
During his tenure at Feyenoord, the 106-time Dutch international led the club to their first Eredivisie title in 17 years, along with securing two KNVB Beker titles. He also achieved success with Rangers by winning the Scottish Cup and reaching the final of the UEFA Europa League in the 2021-22 season, before lifting the Turkish Super Cup with Besiktas in 2024.
Van Bronckhorst takes over from John Heitinga on Slot’s coaching staff, as the former Everton defender transitioned to Ajax as head coach in May.
Changes in Goalkeeping Staff
In addition to Van Bronckhorst’s appointment, Slot has installed Spanish goalkeeping coach Xavi Valero to replace Fabian Otte and renowned World Cup winner Claudio Taffarel.
Valero’s previous experience at Liverpool includes a stint under Rafael Benitez, after which he followed the manager to Internazionale, Chelsea, Napoli, and Real Madrid. His most recent position was at West Ham, where he joined in 2018 from Hebei China Fortune.
Otte departs Liverpool after just one season, while Taffarel bids farewell to Anfield after a four-year tenure.
The Premier League champions will commence their season on August 10th with a Community Shield clash against Crystal Palace. Liverpool’s Premier League journey kicks off on August 15th with an away match against Bournemouth.
