Arne Slot remained resolute following his Liverpool team’s disheartening week, culminating in a loss to Newcastle in the League Cup final on Sunday. He quickly shifted focus to the squad’s pursuit in the Premier League.
The disappointing 2-1 defeat at Wembley came just four days after Liverpool’s exit from the Champions League, where they fell to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties. This outcome has created a sense of anticlimax, despite the fact that they are on the verge of being crowned league champions.
Newcastle celebrated their first major trophy in 56 years and their first domestic silverware in 70 years by overpowering Liverpool in London, clinching victory with goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak.
Federico Chiesa managed to score a consolation goal in injury time, but it proved insufficient for the defending champions, who claimed the title last year against Chelsea.
After the match, Slot was questioned on how he plans to prevent this defeat from impacting the remainder of the season.

Liverpool, heavy favourites to match Manchester United’s record of 20 top-flight English titles, currently sit 12 points clear ahead of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League with just nine games left in the season.
“We’re at one of the world’s largest clubs, Liverpool, and this isn’t the first time in their history or in recent seasons that they’ve lost two consecutive matches,” commented Slot.
“This is a part of football, particularly when one of those matches is against the best team in Europe currently, and the other is against a very strong side like Newcastle.”
‘A Challenging Week’
Slot acknowledged that it had been a “challenging week” but emphasised that his team had managed to increase their lead in the Premier League.
“I want to reiterate that the week started positively with our victory against Southampton,” he remarked.
“That’s why we’ve extended our lead to 12 points with nine fixtures remaining (following Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Chelsea on Sunday).
“When you progress far in tournaments, the opponents become considerably tougher, and losses can occur. Even Liverpool can experience defeats; that’s just part of the game.”
Slot rejected the notion that his players were outclassed by Newcastle despite their below-par showing.
“Being outclassed, for me, means you are unable to touch the ball and they exploit every opportunity when you press them, consistently getting to the ball first,” he clarified. “That’s what I consider being outplayed.
“However, I agree that Newcastle deserved their win as they controlled the game’s tempo. So, yes, they earned their victory, but it wasn’t as if we were merely chasing after them.
“We had to defend against numerous long balls and second balls, which is one of their strengths.”
The Dutch coach stated he would have preferred to continue playing rather than face an international break, as Liverpool’s next fixture is against Everton in the Premier League on April 2nd.
“I would have loved to play next week, but now the situation is that some players will head off to their national teams to compete in two more matches,” he stated.
“Ultimately, it may be a week and a half before we face Everton, who we’re already familiar with from our previous challenging encounter. We’ll have to see how it goes. You’ll need to adapt.”
