Liverpool, the reigning Premier League champions, have expressed “concrete interest” in Bayer Leverkusen’s sought-after midfielder, Florian Wirtz, as confirmed by the club’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, on Monday.
During a press conference held to announce Erik Ten Hag as the new manager following Xabi Alonso’s departure to Real Madrid, Rolfes acknowledged Liverpool’s pursuit of Wirtz, although he clarified that a transfer had not yet been finalised.
“He’s our player… There’s certainly a great deal of interest,” Rolfes stated. “The situation with Florian is ongoing, and we’ll see how it unfolds.”
“It’s clear that Liverpool has expressed serious interest, but there’s nothing more to add right now.”
Reports suggest that Liverpool is contemplating a significant investment for the 22-year-old, who recently made a trip to Merseyside.
Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro had previously indicated that they would only consider parting ways with Wirtz for no less than 150 million euros, a fee that would establish him as Liverpool’s most expensive signing and rank him among the priciest players in football history.
Bayern Munich has also shown a keen interest in the young talent, but German news sources have indicated that Wirtz is leaning towards a move to Liverpool.
In his comments, Ten Hag acknowledged Wirtz’s talents but refrained from disclosing whether he would have the opportunity to manage him next season.
“He’s undoubtedly a remarkable player, and I’ve enjoyed watching his progression over the past few years. I’m pleased that he’s currently with Leverkusen and am thrilled for his development.”
“In professional football, you can never be certain until the transfer window closes on the first of September.”
Wirtz, a highly regarded young prospect, made the switch to Leverkusen from local rivals Cologne in the summer of 2020. He played a pivotal role in Leverkusen clinching their first league title during the 2023-24 season, earning the accolade of Bundesliga player of the season.
