JJ Spaun transformed a chaotic and challenging US Open at the damp and treacherous Oakmont into an unforgettable display of skill, culminating in two spectacular shots that secured his first major title.
The first moment of brilliance came with his driver on the 287m 17th hole, landing perfectly on the green for a birdie that put him in the lead.
Then, on the 18th, facing a maximum of two putts from 20m to clinch the victory, he capped off this fairy-tale week by sinking the longest putt of the entire tournament for another birdie.

Finishing at 1-under, he was the sole player to conclude the tournament under par, securing a two-shot victory over Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre.
This remarkable achievement crowned Spaun, a 36-year-old from California, as a major champion in just his second US Open appearance.
The rain, which nearly rendered Oakmont unplayable, may have ironically provided an advantage for Spaun. Beginning the day one shot behind, he endured a daunting start, recording five bogeys in six holes before an extended rain delay of over an hour and a half.
After a shaky start, which included a bogey after hitting the flagstick, Spaun managed to regroup as many of his competitors faltered.
“Honestly, I don’t think I maintained my composure amidst all the breaks I was receiving,” he reflected.
“I just tried to dig deep, hitting good shots down the stretch. The weather delay we had… it really shifted the entire mood of the day.”
Towards the end, he and his playing partner, Viktor Hovland, found their approach shots in close proximity, with Hovland going first and giving Spaun a reliable read on the putt.
After carefully observing Hovland’s attempt, Spaun stepped up and executed one of the most unforgettable shots in US Open history.

As his ball dropped into the hole, Spaun burst into tears.
“It was just one of those moments you dream of in major championships… thankfully, it was my moment,” he expressed.
“I never imagined I would be here holding this trophy. While I have always had ambitions and dreams, just a few months ago, I had no idea what my potential was or how good I could become.
“I am just proud of my resilience throughout my career and for pushing through challenges.”
