Melbourne Storm star Ryan Papenhuyzen believes he still stands a “massive chance” of making it onto the field for the club’s season opener, despite recent remarks from coach Craig Bellamy.
The 26-year-old did not participate in either of Melbourne’s pre-season trial matches, with Bellamy publicly stating that Papenhuyzen is “doubtful” for round one.
Furthermore, Bellamy mentioned that Papenhuyzen is managing issues with both his knee and ankle; however, the 2020 Clive Churchill Medal winner suggests that the situation may not be as severe as presented.
During the latest episode of the 167 Podcast alongside teammates Jahrome Hughes and Cameron Munster, the fullback was quizzed on his fitness for the upcoming clash with the Eels and took a playful jab at his coach while responding.
“Massive chance,” Papenhuyzen confidently declared.

“Bellza really threw me under the bus there. He mentioned my knee and ankle, making it sound like I’m falling apart – it’s not my ankle, just my knee,” he explained.
“I’ve got a minor tear in my meniscus, but that’s healing nicely. Just dealing with a little bit of irritation from some stitching post-surgery, that’s all.”

“I’ve participated in the last few training sessions. It feels like an ongoing issue, but it’s manageable, and I’m feeling hopeful for a clear bill of health.”
“Bellza tends to be a bit glass half-empty. It’s a bit of a day-by-day journey.”
If Papenhuyzen is unable to play, he will likely be succeeded by the talented Sua Faalogo, who appeared in the trials and has been cleared of serious hamstring concerns.
Additionally, the Storm will be without Nelson Asofa-Solomona for the first two matches due to suspension, which also sidelined him during last year’s grand final against Penrith.
