Lars Knudsen, who took on the role of interim coach for the Danish national team for four matches after Kasper Hjulmand’s exit, is set to leave Augsburg to assume the position of Danish Under-21 coach following this summer’s Under-21 European Championships, as confirmed by the Danish Football Association (FA) in an official press release.
He will replace Steffen Hojer and has signed a contract lasting two years.
“It’s a significant achievement for Danish football to secure such an esteemed coach for the role of nurturing our future national team players.”
“Lars Knudsen brings a wealth of professional expertise, deep understanding of talent development, and a firm grasp of Danish football and our play style. We are confident he will further advance the U21 national team’s development,” said Anders Gerber, the Danish FA’s technical manager.
Last autumn, Knudsen stepped in as interim coach when the appointed national A team manager Morten Wieghorst took a leave of absence due to stress-related issues.
During his tenure, Knudsen led the squad to two victories, one draw, and one defeat across four matches before passing the responsibilities to Brian Riemer.
Currently part of Jess Thorup’s coaching team at Augsburg in the German Bundesliga, Knudsen is eager to return to Danish football.
“I feel proud and excited to have the chance to develop Denmark’s emerging talents. I have been seeking a challenge that allows me to utilise my skills as a head coach and make a meaningful impact on development,” said Lars Knudsen.
