FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced that there are plans to organise a playoff between Los Angeles FC and Club America for a spot in the Club World Cup, following the exclusion of Club Leon from the tournament last month.
Club Leon was withdrawn from the tournament scheduled for June 14 to July 13 due to regulations regarding multi-club ownership. However, they have since appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
“In a few weeks, we will arrive at a final and definitive resolution, and we will adhere to whatever that decision may be,” Infantino informed journalists at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Monday.
“Our intention is that if CAS upholds the decision made by the Appeals Committee, FIFA aims to conduct a playoff match between the team that finished as runners-up in the CONCACAF Champions League, LAFC, and the next highest-ranked team, which is Club America.”
The governing body of world football has indicated that the newly expanded 32-team competition will feature a staggering $1 billion in prize money.
