NBA sensation Kyrie Irving has disclosed that he is “in the process” of qualifying for the Australian basketball squad as he sets his sights on a position at the Los Angeles Olympics.
Born in Melbourne, Irving holds dual citizenship and previously represented the USA at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he secured a gold medal.
His father, Drederick, played for the Bulleen Bullets in the South East Australian Basketball League back in 1992.
While Irving remains eligible to represent the USA if selected, he has confirmed his desire to change his allegiance.

“Honestly, we’re currently in the process of that, just trying to find the best way for me to become eligible,” Irving stated in an interview with Athlon Sports.
“There’s a lot of paperwork to navigate. Of course, the USA still has a choice to make, but I’m just focused on what’s best for me.
“Actually, it would be fantastic if I could be an Aussie at some stage in my career and play for the Australian team.”
By the time the LA Olympics arrive, Irving will be 36 years old and will need the green light from Team USA, Basketball Australia, and FIBA for his transfer to take place.
The Dallas Mavericks star was not included in the Team USA roster for the Paris Olympics, a squad that ultimately claimed the gold medal.
The Boomers faced a disappointing tournament, suffering two defeats in the group stage before being eliminated in the quarter-finals by Serbia.
