The captain of the French football team, Kylian Mbappe, has engaged his legal team to appeal to the French sports minister and UEFA, demanding that his former club, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), settle 55 million euros in outstanding wages. Reports indicate that several of PSG’s financial accounts faced freezing orders on Thursday.
“We are prepared to take assertive action,” stated Delphine Verheyden, Mbappe’s attorney, during a press briefing.
Last year, the French League instructed PSG to compensate the player, but the French federation deemed Mbappe’s request inadmissible due to an ongoing civil court case.
In response, Mbappe’s legal team has sought a ruling from a Paris court to secure a freeze on 55 million euros in PSG’s accounts.
“We have successfully obtained a provisional seizure of PSG’s accounts for an amount totalling 55 million euros this morning,” announced Thomas Clay, one of the legal representatives for Mbappe.
While PSG was unable to provide an immediate comment, they had indicated in October that they would be “compelled to take the matter to the appropriate courts” as they continued to seek an “amicable resolution” with Mbappe.
In January of the previous year, Mbappe claimed he had reached a mutually beneficial agreement with PSG’s president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, that would “safeguard all parties and maintain the club’s focus on the challenges ahead.”
During his seven years with PSG, Mbappe established himself as the club’s all-time leading scorer but made his departure to Real Madrid as a free agent last year.
Moreover, PSG asserted that Mbappe had declined an offer from the LFP to facilitate mediation regarding this matter.
Another attorney, Pierre-Olivier Sur, revealed that they had lodged a harassment complaint, alleging PSG pressured Mbappe to extend his contract in 2023, one year prior to its expiration.
In defence, the Ligue 1 champions contend that Mbappe’s contract was “legally modified” and allege that he failed to honour his commitments when he moved to Real Madrid.
“This case is only indirectly related to us concerning any potential unpaid amounts,” a spokesperson for UEFA informed Reuters on Thursday.
“Should French authorities reach a final decision confirming the existence of unpaid wages, the club would be obliged to settle these debts promptly or risk facing consequences related to financial fair play regulations.”
