In a bid to secure a Champions League spot following a challenging season, a revitalised Borussia Dortmund will rely on their passionate supporters—the 12th man—when they host mid-table Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, according to manager Niko Kovac, speaking on Friday.
After languishing in 11th place earlier this year, Dortmund has significantly improved since Kovac took the helm in February, now positioned sixth, just three points off Freiburg, who currently hold the fourth and final Champions League qualifying berth.
“We are back in contention,” Kovac stated ahead of Saturday’s clash at the Westfalenstadion, which has a capacity of 81,365.
“This match holds great significance. Our focus is on our opponents, as our fortunes are tied to results elsewhere. We need to prepare thoroughly… It’s crucial that we match the energy we’ve displayed in our recent matches.”
“If we perform as we have done lately, I firmly believe we can channel the support from the crowd into a momentum that will challenge Wolfsburg.”
Dortmund has amassed 13 points from their last five outings, propelling them up the ladder with three matches remaining to salvage their season.
Even if Champions League qualification slips away, a spot in the Europa League is still attainable, with RB Leipzig sitting one point ahead of Dortmund in fifth.
Kovac, who previously managed Wolfsburg from 2022 to 2024, acknowledges the threats posed by the Lower Saxony side despite Dortmund’s impressive home record against them.
The Black and Yellows are unbeaten in their last 11 Bundesliga home fixtures against Wolfsburg, securing nine victories. Notably, the visitors have managed just one goal at Westfalenstadion since the 2016-17 season.
“They pose a threat, particularly from set pieces and during transitions. We must remain vigilant,” Kovac cautioned.
“I’m eager to reunite with everyone at Wolfsburg, but we are acutely aware of the match’s significance. Friendships will need to take a back seat for 90 minutes.”
