Ezri Konsa has stated that Aston Villa have demonstrated their ability to compete with the top teams in Europe, despite narrowly missing out against Paris Saint-Germain in a dramatic Champions League quarter-final encounter.
Konsa netted Villa’s third goal in a thrilling 3-2 victory during the second leg on Tuesday, yet the English side was eliminated with a 5-4 loss on aggregate.
PSG looked to be on course for the semi-finals, taking a 2-0 lead with goals from Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes.
Youri Tielemans managed to bring Villa back into the game before half-time, and the home side dominated proceedings in the second half.
In a remarkable turnaround, John McGinn and Konsa found the net within two minutes just before the hour mark.
However, Villa faced frustration due to several outstanding saves from Gianluigi Donnarumma.
“At half-time, we had nothing to lose,” Konsa shared with Amazon Prime.
“We aimed to go out there and make a statement. The lads really put in the effort, pressed well, and I think that was evident.”
This season marked Villa’s return to Europe’s premier competition for the first time since 1983.
Managed by Unai Emery, the team is currently vying for another shot at the Champions League by achieving a top-five finish in the Premier League.
Konsa encouraged his teammates to secure another opportunity to test themselves against Europe’s elite.
“I believe we showed this evening that we can compete at the highest level,” he added. “We hope to do it again next season.”
