Jurgen Klopp, the cherished former manager of Liverpool, remarked that there are “more serious issues in the world than football” following a tragic incident where a car collided with fans at the conclusion of a parade celebrating the club’s Premier League title victory.
A 53-year-old man from the Liverpool region has been taken into custody by law enforcement on suspicion of attempted murder and drug offences after 65 individuals sustained injuries in the distressing events on Monday.
Klopp, who departed from the renowned English club a year prior, was present at the parade.
This celebration marked the first occasion for the club and its supporters to unite in joy over a title victory in 35 years, as the 2019/20 season triumph, achieved under Klopp’s management, occurred amidst restrictions on public gatherings due to Covid-19.
“The atmosphere was fantastic, and in the blink of an eye, everything changed as we were reminded that there are more serious matters in the world than football,” Klopp stated while receiving an accolade from the League Managers’ Association.
“My thoughts and prayers go out to those injured, as far as I understand, as well as their families.”
“This should have been one of the most remarkable days in the city’s history after such a long time, considering we were unable to celebrate in this way previously.”
Liverpool manager Arne Slot chose to withdraw from the same event, where he was set to receive a manager of the year honour, out of respect for the victims.
In the wake of this tragic incident, even Liverpool’s staunchest rivals, including Manchester United, Everton, and Manchester City, extended their support to the Premier League champions and their fanbase.
“Football is, and should always be, a sport rooted in rivalry, yet it also serves as a powerful source of camaraderie, particularly in moments like this,” Slot expressed in a statement.
“I would also like to commend the emergency services and local authorities in Liverpool, who acted immediately following the incident.”
“Together with the supporters and bystanders who aided each other in a time of need, I believe all those involved in the aftermath deserve our heartfelt gratitude.”
During a press conference on Tuesday, police confirmed that 11 of the injured individuals remained in hospital but were in a stable condition.
