Kawasaki Frontale’s coach, Shigetoshi Hasebe, has brushed aside the significant financial disparity between his J-League club and the deep-pocketed Saudi Pro League team Al Ahli as they gear up for the Asian Champions League Elite final this Saturday.
Kawasaki secured their spot in the finale at Jeddah’s King Abdullah Sports City Stadium, home turf for Al Ahli, with a remarkable win against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr on Wednesday, and Hasebe is now focused on taking down another formidable opponent.
Al Ahli boasts a squad valued at approximately $200 million and is home to UEFA Champions League victors Riyad Mahrez and Roberto Firmino. However, Hasebe contends that the significant transfer fees and salaries associated with Saudi clubs will have no bearing come kick-off.
“While the budget is undeniably crucial, players don’t step onto the field carrying their wallets or credit cards,” Hasebe stated during the press conference.
“Football unfolds on the pitch. Sure, finances and budgets may influence the game in some way, but ultimately it’s about what happens on the field.”
Kawasaki, whose annual salary expenditure is roughly one-third of the reported $59 million earned by Mahrez each year, will make their first appearance in the continental championship final, having never advanced past the quarter-finals in previous years.
Following an extra-time victory over Qatar’s Al-Sadd last Sunday, the four-time J-League champions reached the semi-finals, where they orchestrated a stunning 3-2 win against Al Nassr just two days later.
Al Ahli will enjoy the benefit of a crowd predominantly supporting them at the final, yet Hasebe believes his team might still attract a substantial number of supporters within the packed stadium.
Around 300 Kawasaki fans endured a 16-hour journey to Jeddah for the semi-final, with more anticipated to make the trip for the final. Hasebe is also optimistic about winning over support from elsewhere.
“We’re not dealing with any major injuries; the squad is fit and ready to play tomorrow,” Hasebe confirmed. “Although Al Ahli’s fans will fill the stadium, I believe supporters from rival teams like Al Hilal or Al Nassr will also come out. I doubt that all Saudi fans are rallying behind Al Ahli.
“Let’s not overlook the fans from Japan who have travelled to support us. Their presence will be immensely valuable.”
