AFL legend Kane Cornes, who has stirred up controversy as a sports commentator, has reacted to North Melbourne’s decision to prevent him from engaging with the club’s coach or players.
In a press conference on Wednesday, Kangaroos football manager Todd Viney stated that he did not want Cornes involved in any interviews during Thursday’s broadcast by Channel Seven ahead of their match against Essendon.
Cornes and fellow commentator Luke Hodge were scheduled to chat with coach Alastair Clarkson in the North Melbourne changerooms before the game.
In an Instagram video, the former Port Adelaide player shared that his producer had informed him he would no longer be able to conduct that interview with Clarkson.
Viney corroborated this in his official statement.
“Based on some comments that we feel, during my short tenure here, have led to personal and unnecessary attacks on the club, we believe that they have been unjustified,” Viney remarked.

“We acknowledge the importance of the media and recognise our role in cooperating with it to promote our game and keep our members informed. However, we believe that some of Kane’s comments, particularly earlier this week regarding players Jy Simpkin and Harry Sheezel, were out of line—specifically, they displayed targeted, vindictive bullying behaviour that we, as a club, will not tolerate.
“We are open to constructive criticism regarding our performances, but when the discourse becomes personal, it is our duty as a club to protect our team and those involved.
“Consequently, the opportunity for Channel Seven, Luke Hodge, or whoever they wish to engage with Clarkson remains available, but we won’t interact with Kane until we feel he can converse in a respectful manner concerning our club and its members.”
Cornes appeared unfazed by the restrictions, posting a video to his social media shortly after the news.
“Effectively, I commented on one of their key players, Harry Sheezel, who I’ve expressed my admiration for multiple times,” Cornes stated.

“I feel they aren’t using him effectively, and he’s racking up his stats in unimpactful ways. North Melbourne needs to prompt him to be more impactful and get the ball in more advantageous positions.
“It’s odd that Clarkson, with all his experience, couldn’t address these concerns, alongside the various challenges facing North Melbourne that I’ve pointed out.”
Cornes concluded, “Banned from the North Melbourne rooms… let’s see if they can secure their second win of the season. I’m looking forward to it.”
Cornes, who previously worked for Nine, is currently seen on Channel Seven and SEN radio.
The Kangaroos lost to Port Adelaide in round seven and are set to face the Bombers on Thursday. They’ve managed only one win this season and find themselves occupying the second-last position on the AFL ladder.
