Star of the Western Sydney Wanderers, Juan Mata, has been honoured with an MBE for his contributions to sport and charity. This recognition comes from His Majesty King Charles III’s 2023 list of Honorary Awards for foreign nationals.
The World Cup champion officially received his accolade on June 27 at the residence of the British Ambassador in Madrid, Spain.
Mata’s honour reflects not only his remarkable football career but also his philanthropic efforts, notably co-founding Common Goal, an initiative encouraging its members to contribute one per cent of their earnings to charitable causes. To date, over 250 footballers and coaches have joined this movement.
“I’m incredibly thankful for this recognition,” Mata remarked after receiving his MBE.
“It’s a privilege to devote my professional life to my passion—football—and to be involved in something with such worldwide impact.
“Sport, and football in particular, possesses a remarkable ability to bring people together and instigate positive change. This award reinforces our determination to support those striving to enhance lives through our beloved game.”
