Joshua Kimmich, the Bayern Munich midfielder, announced that he intends to extend his contract “within the next few days” following his pivotal role in the team’s victory over Bayer Leverkusen, which secured their place in the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday.
The 30-year-old’s existing contract is set to expire at the season’s end, marking a decade at the club.
Bayern’s sporting director, Max Eberl, expressed that the decision to sign an extension is now up to Kimmich.
“A new deal will definitely be finalised in the coming days,” the Germany captain shared with the media.
“It’s been a challenging few days due to the busy match schedule.”
Captain Manuel Neuer, midfielder Jamal Musiala, and defender Alphonso Davies all penned contract extensions in February.
Kimmich joined Bayern from RB Leipzig in 2015 and has since made 429 appearances across all competitions, clinching eight Bundesliga titles and the Champions League in 2020.
The midfielder has represented Germany 97 times, netting seven goals.
Bayern currently holds an eight-point lead over second-place Leverkusen in the Bundesliga and is set to face Inter Milan in the Champions League quarter-finals.
