Fenerbahce coach Jose Mourinho has received a four-match suspension and a fine exceeding €40,000 from the Turkish football federation as a result of his remarks following the intense Istanbul derby against Galatasaray.
Following the 0-0 draw on Monday, the 62-year-old Mourinho remarked that the home bench was “jumping like monkeys“.
He also reiterated his grievances regarding the performance of Turkish referees.
“I said to the referee (Slavko Vincic): ‘Thank you for officiating this magnificent match.’ The Turkish referee was there too,” he stated.
“I turned to him and remarked: ‘If a Turkish referee had officiated this match, it would have been a calamity.’
Fenerbahce defended Mourinho, claiming that his statements were taken out of context.
On Thursday, the disciplinary council of the Turkish football federation (TFF) imposed a two-match suspension for his comments directed at the fourth official, alongside an additional two matches for his criticism towards the Galatasaray bench.
The comments were deemed “against sporting ethics”.
Mourinho’s team currently sits six points behind Galatasaray in the league standings, and he has been fined just over €42,000.
Galatasaray’s manager, Okan Buruk, was also issued a one-match ban due to his post-match comments, where he scrutinised Vincic’s officiating and referred to Mourinho as ‘the Crying One’.
